Nova Scotia Graduated Drivers License System:

The Government of Nova Scotia introduced this Graduated Drivers License system on first October 1994. From 1994 any resident of Nova Scotia who is willing to apply or applying, they must apply for the learner license under the Graduated Drivers License system. This program consists of 3 phases where the new drivers who are applying must complete these 3 phases successfully. Nova Scotia Graduated Drivers License system 3 phases are:

  • Learner’s License Phase.
  • Newly Licensed Phase.
  • Restricted Individual Phase.

Drivers License Fees

Nova Scotia Graduated Drivers License System for Passenger Vehicles:

Learner’s License Phase:

  • Applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia.
  • Applicant must pass the written test.
  • Duration of this Phase 1 will be 12 months.

Restrictions in Phase1:

  • Nova Scotia Learner License holder should maintain zero blood alcohol concentration.
  • Must drive under the supervision of a full stage driver.
  • Supervising full stage driver should sit in the front seat.
  • Supervising full stage driver must hold a valid Class 5 Full stage License.
  • Supervising full stage driver should be under, 0.05 blood alcohol concentration.

Note:

After the successful 12 months period as a learner license holder, the holder must pass the road test to become a Newly Licensed Driver.

Newly Licensed Driver Phase:

  • Applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia.
  • Applicant must pass the road test.
  • Duration of this Phase 2 will be 24 months.

Restrictions in Phase2:

  • Nova Scotia Learner License holder should maintain zero blood alcohol concentration.
  • Holder should not drive between midnight and 5:00 AM.
  • Only limited number of passengers.

Note:

To complete this newly licensed driver phase, the holder must take a 6-hour defensive driving course, and the holder must provide graduation certificate, it can be done in person or by mail. If the graduation certificate is not submitted by the newly licensed driver he/she will remain as a newly licensed driver.

Restricted Individual Stage:

  • Applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia.
  • Applicant must submit the Graduation Certificate.
  • Duration of this Phase 3 will be 36 months.

Restrictions in Phase3:

  • Nova Scotia Learner License holder should maintain zero blood alcohol concentration.

Note:

After the successful 24 months period as a restricted individual stage driver, the holder will be considered as a fully experienced driver.

Nova Scotia Graduated Drivers License System for Motor Cycles:

Motor Cycle Learner’s License Phase:

  • Applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia.
  • Applicant must obtain a learner’s class 7 or class 8 License.
  • Applicant must pass the motorcycle rules test.
  • Applicant must complete the practical skills test.
  • Duration of this Phase 1 will be 6 months.

Restrictions in Phase1:

  • Nova Scotia Learner License holder should maintain zero blood alcohol concentration.
  • No passengers.
  • Should drive during the daytime.

Note:

After the successful 6 months period as a learner license holder, the holder must pass the road test to become Newly Licensed Driver.

Newly Licensed Motor Cycle Driver Phase:

Restrictions in Phase2:

  • Nova Scotia Learner License holder should maintain zero blood alcohol concentration.
  • Holder should not drive between midnight and 5:00 AM.
